SBPT: Kim @ Dreaming In Libraries

It's that time of the week again! Todays epic blogger is Kim from Dreaming in Libraries. She's a German blogger who I have to say I'm a little in love with, she's made this tour for me and a friend for life (she has no choice in this).
Being from Germany we thought up a cool post idea where she compares German and UK book covers. I've never understood why the publishers change the covers but it would seem that the German ones do appeal more to Kim and the UK ones more to me. So enjoy the post and let us know what you think of the covers.

English Covers vs. German covers

I’m Kim blogging over at Dreaming in Libraries!

So for this guest post Mily asked me to do something very fun: comparing English covers to German covers. If you’ve ever wondered whether English books translated into German would end up with the same covers, the answer would be: most unlikely! German publishing houses almost always don’t only change the title of the book; they create a complete new cover, too.

I’ve thought of ten covers from my book shelves to show you the differences between their original covers and the German ones.

Here we go alphabetically:

    

After by Anna Todd

I think I prefer the German version of “After”, especially if you have a look at the following books in that series. You probably won’t see it in the picture very well, but the black font is shiny and haptic as is the flowery thing. The rest of the book cover is matt.

    

Awaken by Katie Kacvinsky

These covers really don’t look similar AT ALL! If it weren’t for the name of the author on it, you couldn’t tell it was ONE book. I do like both covers very much. Since I own the German version, I’d probably tend to like that one more, but the English cover is pretty cool, too.

    

Harry Potter by J. K. Rowling

Both covers are very different and yet so similar… I can’t tell you why, but I’m not the hugest fan of either of those covers. I think it’s because of the drawing, though. Both covers contain a drawing of Harry Potter and I don’t like either of them.

   

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Again, I can’t really tell you which one I like better. Both covers are quite different. Yet I’d probably again prefer the German cover, because it fits the story a bit better. 

    

Let’s Get Lost by Adi Alsaid

I love both covers of this book very much! Both of them are unique in their own ways and I think they are gorgeous. At last covers without people on it ;-)!

    

Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

As for this series I definitely prefer the German covers! They are shiny and I just like the design in general.  I think the model looks a bit freaky on the English cover.

    

Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini

I love the German covers – as a whole, the trilogy looks gorgeous on my book shelf. I don’t really know why the English cover doesn’t speak to me, but I probably wouldn't have picked up the book, if I had only seen the English copy in my bookstore.

    

Thoughtless by S.C. Stephens

So, the content of those two covers is pretty similar and yet they are completely different. To be honest, I don’t like the English cover at all and I’m very happy that I have the beautiful German covers on my shelf :-)!

  

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

There are two different German covers for one of my favorite series ever. Unfortunately the hardcover version isn’t beautiful at all! Maybe the publishing house realized that too, because in fall they’re publishing all books of that series as a much prettier paperback version again and they won’t continue with the original hardcovers. Also, I’m glad they stuck to the English cover this time, because I like that one really much.

    

Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini

Another series by Josephine Angelini and again, I prefer the German cover! I think that one is just stunning and it fits the story so well! Nonetheless the English cover looks amazing, as well, so I’d totally buy that copy, too.

I'm Amber! My blog is called YA Indulgences and focuses on Contemporary. I love reading, listening to music, binging on Netflix, raving about musicals and of course, blogging. Coffee is my drink of choice, Contemporary is my genre and Veronica Mars is my favorite show. I can be a bit of a sarcastic person, but I promise it just means I care! 1. Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

I generally read in bed. :)

2. Bookmark or a random piece of paper?

In theory, I would love to use bookmarks, but I'm more likely to use whatever, random piece of paper, bobby pin, random cord, a pen...

3. Can you stop reading anytime you want or do you have to stop at a certain page, chapter, part, ect.?

If I'm super sucked in, there's not stopping me. If I'm not really into a book, I can stop anytime.

4. Do you eat or drink while reading?

Only if I'm lucky. ;)

5. Can you read while listening to music/watching TV?

Sometimes! It really depends, I know when I've tried in the past it didn't always go too well.

6. One book at a time, or several at once?

I would love to stick to only one book at a time, but different books keep calling me, so I'm reading quite a few right now.

7. Reading at home or everywhere?

EVERYWHERE. ON THE BUS, AT CLASSES, IN STRIP CLUBS, WALKING THROUGH WALGREENS, IN THE CAR, WALKING DOWN THE STREET, AT HOME, EVERYWHERE!

8. Reading out loud or silently in your head?

Silently! I hate reading out loud. :(

9. Do you read ahead or skip pages?

I try not to read ahead but my eyes sometimes wonder down the page if it looks interesting.

10. Breaking the spine or keeping it new?

Keeping it new! I'm even careful with paperbacks when reading so that when I close them, the cover doesn't stick up.

11. Do you write in books?

NEVER. I WOULD NOT EVER WRITE IN A BOOK.

Wait, does the Bible count? I totally write in the Bible.

Breaking The Rules by Katie McGarry

Okay so the reason I'm looking forward to this is because Katie is, in my humble opinion, the Queen of Swoon and her books are some of my favourite contemporary books ever. I've actually read this series completely out of order so having Breaking The Rules numbered as 1.5 (on Goodreads) doesn't really matter too much to me. I know what you're thinking, 0.5's are usually novella's but I checked and this is going to be 300+ pages of glorious swoons and epic story lines. This book in the Pushing The Limits series goes back to the lovely Echo and we get to have another instalment of her wonderfully broken character. Can't wait to read this one!!! Also it's out in PERFECT time for Christmas :)

The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan

I've been reading the Percy Jackson Series since I was in sixth grade, and I've followed the series since. It was one of the first books that really brought me into the world of fandoms and the final book is being released in October. I'm simultaneously ready and not ready. But I am more than excited to see Percabeth and read about Percy!

Exquisite Captive by Heather Demterios

I love reading about diverse cultures, languages, different forms of art etc. And I think Exquisite Captive is a shoe-in for that. From the synopsis alone, I can already tell that this is going to be a very rich and delicious read. Blue Lily, Lily Blue by Maggie Stiefvater

Although there is a slew of new book releases this fall, none excite me more than Maggie Stiefvater's Blue Lily, Lily Blue, the third book in The Raven Cycle series.. I am eager to continue my journey with Blue and her Raven boys. Stiefvater has a gift for writing some of the most complex and flawed characters I've ever come across. I'm actually equally frightened and overjoyed by this release because of my slightly irrational emotional attachment to the characters. If you haven't read the series yet, I can't recommend it enough.

The YA Club

In A Handful Of Dust by Mindy McGinnis

Publication Date: September 23rd 2014

Mindy McGinnis' companion book to her gritty and realistic post-apocalyptic debut Not A Drop to Drink, IN A HANDFUL OF DUST follows Lynn and Lucy's survival story as they leave their now unsafe pond and their home to journey west in search of better prospects. The first book was a gut-wrenching and heart-achingly compelling story with realistic characters and a world that's not too different from our own. I loved the book so I'm really looking forward to see more of Lynn and Lucy, and once again dive into McGinnis' evocative writing.

I have this one sitting on my Kindle waiting to be read! Need to get on it, looks SO good!!!

Queen of Zombie Hearts by Gena Showalter

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this series! And while I'm sad to see it come to a close, I'm also excited to find out what happens next. Zombies aren't in much that I read, and so it's always fun to see them come alive (or not) on the page!

Stone Cold Touch by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Need I say more? Jen is the queen of YA and everyone knows (or should know) it! I love all of her books and can't wait for this after the cliffhanger ending of White Hot Kiss. I want me some more Roth!

Caught Read Handed

The Rosie Effect by Graeme Simsion

I'm excited about this book because The Rosie Project was one of my absolute favorite reads of 2013. It was a fun, fresh, and completely wonderful book that I just flew through. When I found out there was going to be a sequel, I literally squealed. I cannot wait to see what happened to Don and Rosie after the end of the first book. Rosie is pregnant! I can't wait to read about how Don reacts to learning how to become a father. It's going to be so fun!

Laura's Little Book Blog

Us by David Nicholls

The book I am really looking forward to this fall is Us by David Nicholls. I read One Day all the way back in 2011 and completely fell in love with it. It was written so well and so easy to get into, so I am so excited to read more from him. Hopefully though the ending won’t leave me feeling distraught this time though! I also still need to watch the film for One Day! The 28^th October cannot come soon enough!

Ghost stories are my absolute favourite and I am so so excited that an author I have loved for her YA stories has chosen not only to write for adults too, but that she's chosen this genre as well. I hope I can get on a reviewer list because the end of September seems just sooooo far away! (Plus, aren't Autumn nights just made for ghosts?!)

A Perfection Called Books

Lailah by Nikki Kelly

I am so excited for this fall release because it sounds amazing. Lailah is a paranormal novel containing angels and vampires, and who doesn't love those? Originally this book started out on Wattpad and became wildly popular. It must be good! I've befriended the author, and she is amazing!! Nikki is such a sweet, amazing person, and I can't wait to read her book. I've read an excerpt of the novel, and I already love her writing style. AND there are two swoon worthy boys! Lailah hits the stores on October 7th, I can't wait! 

This book!!! I've been dying to read Lailah for what feels like forever! The author, Nikki Kelly is lovely and I'm super excited that the release for this is in less than a month! EEP!!!

Between The Lines

The Iron Trail is the first book in the Magisterium series, and is set to release on September 11^th. I want to read this book main;y because of 2 reasons, the first one being the authors and what I’ve heard and read about their previous books, and also the synopsis of this book sounds awesome. The Iron Trail is a middle grade fantasy series which follows the students of an academy called Magisterium, Magisterium is a academy of magic, which already sounds wonderful as it is. The Goodreads synopsis of The Iron Trail makes is sounds utterly magical, and I personally can’t wait for this release

I really really want to read this book. I have read all of her books so far and I absolutely love the Cousin’s War series which are full of passion, sex, love and bitter betrayals. The Cousin’s War, also known as The War of The Roses ripped this country apart and set families against each other, mainly in the royal family. This is the last book and is based on Margaret Pole, daughter to George, Duke of Clarence and is the last of the Plantagenet’s and the latest threat to Henry VII’s reign. Following her through her life from being the daughter of a traitor to the companion of a princess Philippa Gregory brings to life a often overlooked woman who was actually very important to her cousin Henry VIIIs reign. Full of passion, unfulfilled curses and betrayal this book is a must have summer read to anyone who enjoys history and literature.

I know this isn't technically a fall read, but I didn't have the heart to tell her. Holly's been waiting on this book FOREVER and I'm also very exciting about it :) 

Books - A Novel Idea

Killer Instinct (The Naturals #2)By Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Publication Date: November 4th, 2014 

I'm super excited about this one because it's such a different genre from what I'm used to reading in YA these days. It's suspenseful, gritty, and the sections in 2nd person are creepy to say the least. The Naturals series is a Psychological Thriller, and Barnes does a great job at keeping us invested in the serial killer case and the characters. I can't wait to see what's in store for the characters this time around!

Lily Does LA (Girls on Tour 2) by Nicola Doherty.

A new Nicola Doherty release is always something I look forward to but Lily Does LA is the book I’ve most being looking forward to since her Girls on Tour series was announced. It’s set in one of my absolute favourite places to read about and from the synopsis, sounds like it will be just as funny and entertaining as the rest of her books. Nicola always writes characters I love, ones that are so easy to relate to and there’s normally a new book boyfriend on the scene too… I’m sure Lily Does LA will put a smile on my face just as much as her other books have done and I really can’t wait to read it.

Part of the World

Mortal Heart by Robin LaFevers

Publication Date: November 4th 2014

I'm not normally a fan of historical fiction, so when I first started this series, I wasn't sure I'd like it. But c'mon, there were NUN ASSASSINS. There was no way I wasn't going to see what this was all about. I ended up LOVING the first two books! Richly detailed and set in a historical setting, but in no way were they boring or hard to follow. And the characters are strong-willed, able to kick major butt, and can take care of themselves. That heroism is endearing. I'm dying to read Annith's story, yet I'm so sad this will be the last one.  But I have no doubt it'll be just as amazing as its predecessors.

I've seen this series being thrown around a lot recently! I may have to check it out, I love a little historical fiction.

So that's what we're looking forward to this Autumn! There's something for everyone, from Contemporaries to Thrillers, Ghost Stories to Romance & a lot of YA goodness.
