Summary

As a young child Eponine never knew kindness, except once from her family's kitchen slave, Cosette. When at sixteen the girls' paths cross again and their circumstances are reversed, Eponine must decide what that friendship is worth, even though they've both fallen for the same boy. In the end, Eponine will sacrifice everything to keep true love alive.

Q&A with Susan Fletcher
author of A Little In Love

Why did you want to write Ă‰ponine’s story? What was your inspiration?

The idea was not, actually, mine! Chicken House – the wonderful publishers of A Little In Love – approached me with the idea in early 2013. As soon as I heard it, I knew it was an extraordinary opportunity – a gift – and I had no hesitation in accepting the challenge. Eponine has always been my favourite character in Les Miserables – so from the very beginning, this book has been both a privilege and a total pleasure for me.

How did it feel to see A Little In Love develop from your initial idea into a physical book?

This is my fifth book, so I might have expected to have grown accustomed to the writing process by now. But I haven’t – and to see the actual physical book for the first time remains a magical moment. It’s hard to believe that my words – the ones I jotted down in cafes, or scrawled in the dark on the edge of sleep, or simply tapped into a laptop whilst thinking Is that any good?? – have made it into a printed, actual book. I must admit that there was added magic with A Little In Love because of the absolutely stunning artwork that Chicken House have given it; the care and attention to detail is incredible. The hardback copy even has red, white and blue stitching! So to see the final version of this novel was perhaps the most incredible moment yet.

Who was your favourite character to write and why?

Eponine! But aside from her, there were several characters I have come away with tender feelings for. Strangely, none of them are particularly central to the narrative. I liked writing about the chestnut seller because he is the sudden example of kindness and compassion amongst all the darkness; he, alongside Eponine, is a reminder that there is still good in the world. I liked old Augustine with his peach tree – such a fleeting character but I felt very fond of him, and his bad hands. I also enjoyed Gavroche: resilient, cheeky and cheerful. In Hugo’s book, he is shot on the barricades – but I did not want to include that in A Little In Love. For those who don’t know Les Miserables, they might believe that he survives – and I’d like to think that he does.

Don’t you just love the cover art? – Sorry to gush but I adore it!! Both paperback and hardcover!! <3

I do! I do! Gush away! I’ve been gushing about it ever since I saw it. I’m thrilled that you – and so many others – think it’s beautiful too. Chicken House has produced such a stunning book – from its cover design, to the end papers, to the font itself… Even the hardback copy’s ribbon marker! I am just overwhelmed by what they’ve done. In both hardback and paperback, i’s one of the most beautiful books I’ve seen – and by sheer good fortune and a little bit of magic, it turns out that it’s one of mine! I am such a lucky writer.

If you could pick anyone, whom would you cast in a movie adaptation of A Little In Love? (Excluding the 2012 Le Miserables cast)

That’s a hard question! As I wrote the book, I created my own characters in my head – and so I it’s hard to find people who might portray them as I saw them. Eddie Redmayne and Samantha Barks were great castings in the 2012 film, certainly. Le Patron Minette were only briefly portrayed in the film, so perhaps they are easier to cast. I offer John Malkovich for Babet and John Leguizamo as Montparnasse!

Who was your least favourite character to write and why?

I didn’t like Le Patron Minette for obvious reasons! It’s hard to write about such unpleasant people – and whilst selling teeth was not uncommon at the time, I winced every time I mentioned it! But even such dark characters provide opportunities for the writer, and I actually really enjoyed Eponine’s conversations with Montparnasse. They provide a chance for her to show her wit and spirit; I hope there are moments in them, too, where Montparnasse becomes a more dimensional man.

What was your biggest challenge about re-writing a character as well known as Ă‰ponine? And how did you go about making her your own?

I decided to simply write about my Eponine – the girl that I had always imagined her to be. I made this decision because, firstly, my Eponine would surely be like many other people’s Eponine, too; how I perceived her to be would not be too dissimilar from how others had done. But secondly, because as my Eponine I was very fond of her. She was real for me – even before this book began – and so in order to create a real, plausible and lovable Eponine on paper, I decided it would be best to go with this girl who was, to my eye, already these things.

Lastly, in FIVE words, tell us why we should read A Little In Love?

Eponine’s own story – at last.

Summary
The only thing bigger than the world is fear. Lucy’s life by the pond has always been full. She has water and friends, laughter and the love of her adoptive mother, Lynn, who has made sure that Lucy’s childhood was very different from her own. Yet it seems Lucy’s future is settled already—a house, a man, children, and a water source—and anything beyond their life by the pond is beyond reach. When disease burns through their community, the once life-saving water of the pond might be the source of what’s killing them now. Rumors of desalinization plants in California have lingered in Lynn’s mind, and the prospect of a “normal” life for Lucy sets the two of them on an epic journey west to face new dangers: hunger, mountains, deserts, betrayal, and the perils of a world so vast that Lucy fears she could be lost forever, only to disappear in a handful of dust. In this companion to Not a Drop to Drink, Mindy McGinnis thrillingly combines the heart-swelling hope of a journey, the challenges of establishing your own place in the world, and the gripping physical danger of nature in a futuristic frontier.

Why Yes, Orwell Would Enjoy This

A lot of people ask me how I came up with the idea for NOT A DROP TO DRINK. The scary answer is that I watched a documentary. The scarier answer is that was in 2010, and here in 2014 all I have to do is turn on the news.

Yep. A scant four years after watching a documentary titled Blue Gold which sent me to the ceiling and spawned awkward ice-breaking conversations from yours truly, most people know exactly what I’m talking about whenever I use the word water, followed by the panic-inducing words like crisis, situation, or scarcity.

California is staring down a mega-drought that could last into the next generation. The Colorado River appears to be drying up and the Southwest is depreciating underwater aquifers at a rate that they can never recover from. And that’s all gleaned from one article.

Recently in my home state of Ohio, half a million people lost their water when poisonous algae in Lake Erie made theirs taps unsafe. Ohio residents drove across the Midwest to purchase water, filling their carts Michigan and turning around to drive over 200 miles back home. And in this case, the Wolverines let the Buckeyes have their water because they had some to spare.

But what if they didn’t?

That’s the world of NOT A DROP TO DRINK, and by extension, IN A HANDFUL OF DUST. A world where the one thing that you and every person you care for will die without in three days, is scarce.

Does that make you think twice about picking up the book?

Then you should probably skip the news, too.

Summary

After her father’s untimely demise in a mining accident and her mother’s abandonment, Lauren Lindsay is no stranger to loss. She’s used to living life for one person: herself. That is, until another family tragedy thrusts three children into her care and uproots her life in ways she could never imagine. Lauren's first instinct is to run, until she meets their striking, mysterious neighbor Dean Powell. Their immediate chemistry and his connection with her late father just might be enough to keep her in town long enough to uncover pieces of her past that she never had answers to. Dean’s shady past and her reluctance to trust him could cost her the life she's always been searching for, but will she run back to her old life? Or will she choose to stay and live the life her father always imagined for her?

I had a little chat with the lovely Lily back in August, check it out HERE.

Review

I get to spend a whole post talking about IGNITE?
YAY!!!!
I. LOVE. THIS. BOOK. It's exactly the kind of book I adore reading! It's a mix of YA themes and story telling with NA characters that are damn near perfect I can’t even cope. Okay, there are one or two little blips but I honestly don't care. I got completely wrapped up in this book and I didn't want it to end.

This book follows a young lady as she gets thrown into a life she never expected to be living. Now the sole guardian of her three step siblings (after her step-mothers unexpected death) Lauren has to find a way to look after these children as well as live her own life. What will happen with her degree? Where will she find the money to care for them? And how will she be able to focus on all of this with the rather dashing Dean Powell throwing her mix signals left right and centre? This is a story of family, trust and learning to embrace the unexpected.

The most interesting thing about this book was Lauren. At least it was for me, and I think that has something to do with the fact that I'm the same age as her. I honestly couldn’t imaging being in a situation where I found myself with three children I barely know suddenly being thrusted into my care and it's the way in which Lauren deals with this that was so completely captivating for me. I admired her strength and the way she adapted to her new life. In so many books the main protagonist can come across as winey and melodramatic, but Lauren didn't. Sure she made mistakes, but what 21 year-old doesn't? She’s smart, kind and everything you want in a leading lady.

Now onto Dean...

That's really all I got. You need to read this book to find out just how complex and amazing this character is. He's the perfect book boyfriend that makes me swoon every time his name pops up on the page. One reason to read IGNITE? Dean freaking Powell!!! And not to challenge the author or anything (because Lily I do love you) but as much as I like the idea of Nick Bateman, I totally see Ed Westwick as Dean...

Moving onto the scene-stealer that is Emma. She is just the cutest thing ever! I'm completely in love with this kid and her adorableness and I kind of just want to adopt her!!! The relationship between Lauren and Dean had a tendency to be a little hot and cold but with Emma perfectly situated in the middle they were always connected. Emma would not be pleased if she never got to see her Dean. Also, Emma plays such an important part in the story. She the character that everyone loves, that everyone feels some kind of connection to and no matter what's happening no one would ever leave this like blond cutie-pies side.
Okay so there were a couple of issues, although that's really to be expected from a debut novel. I think that some of the clues had been dropped a little too soon or where a smidgen too obvious and that made certain Dean related aspects of the story line a little predictable at times. Then there was the way in which the whole 'fate' plot line was a little over the top. However, at the same time I fell in love with that too. The way everything was meant to be and the strong connections between everything was really heart warming and I found that I adored that part of the story. Although, I can also see how it could be seen as a little copious at times.

Overall this book was great! I'm stoked that there is going to be a companion novel told from the prospective of the illustrious Dean and I can't wait to get sucked into this story all over again. Yes, it's a tad clichĂ© at times but the characters are so sweet and likeable that it doesn't really matter. I really hope you lot give this one a shot as I truly think it deserves it.

P.S. I was lucky enough to have a little chit-chat with the lovely Lily a couple of weeks back and she said that this song inspired IGNITE. I hadn't yet read the book at the time but now I have I can totally see it!!
